Bad Links? | I-285 detours urged this weekend and nextConstruction on I-85 reaches interchangeBy JOHN MUNFORD The reconstruction of northbound lanes on Interstate 85 this weekend will again play havoc with traffic and, as usual, motorists are urged to avoid affected areas. Severe congestion is predicted as the work will be near the I-85/I-285 interchange, DOT officials said. Two right northbound lanes from Flat Shoals Road to the I-285 interchange will be closed all weekend from Friday at 9 p.m. through Monday at 5 a.m. To reach I-285 eastbound, motorists are urged to use exit 69 (Old National Highway) and I-285 westbound can be reached by going downtown and taking I-20 east. Two left lanes on I-85 northbound between Collingsworth Road and Ga. Highway 74 will be closed between midnight tonight and noon Saturday, and again between midnight Saturday to noon Sunday. Also, two right lanes on I-85 northbound will be closed between half a mile south of the Fayetteville Road overpass to Ga. Highway 138 from 9 p.m. tonight to 9 p.m. Saturday. Those lanes will also be closed from 4 a.m. Sunday to 1 a.m. Monday. Two left lanes on that same stretch of I-85 will be closed from Sunday at 4 a.m. to Monday at 1 a.m. One southbound lane will be closed between Fayetteville Road and Hwy. 138 from 4 a.m. Sunday to 1 a.m. Monday also. The northbound on-ramps leading from I-85 to I-285 will be closed briefly late Friday through early Saturday, and next weekend they will be shut down entirely from Friday, Oct. 14 at 9 p.m. to Monday, Oct. 17 at 5 a.m. The work is necessary so lanes of I-85 northbound can be replaced, according to officials from the Georgia Department of Transportation. The project is slated to end a week before Christmas. Our contractors are doing everything necessary to try and finish this work on time, said Metro District Construction Engineer Mickey McGee.
