Bad Links? | Four locals get wins last Friday By MICHAEL BOYLAN Last Friday saw Starrs Mill, Whitewater, Sandy Creek and Fayette County pick up big wins, while Landmark, Our Lady of Mercy and McIntosh were handed tough losses. Whitewater had a tough test ahead of them last week when they took on Landmark Christian School on the road. The Wildcats stepped up, especially on defense, and shutdown the War Eagles 24-14. Whitewater got two touchdowns from Tavoris Dixon, one from Alex Camp who recovered a blocked punt from Cody Haralson, and a field goal from Jordan Cooper. The team also got huge defensive nights from Tim Jones, Jonathan Bringuel, Jonathon Ashley, Ryan Johnson, Dustin Davis and Jonah Jaurigue. Landmarks passing game was still on as Matt Moody threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns but the War Eagles running game was held to a total of 18 yards. Miles King caught seven passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns, while Jimmy Eden caught eight passes for 105 yards. On defense, both Nathan Hunter and Tim Creamer led the team with eight tackles. Whitewater (6-0) plays at Athens Academy (3-2-1) this Friday. Landmark (4-3) hosts Our Lady of Mercy (0-7). Sandy Creek got the win, which was the most important thing for the team, especially as it came during their homecoming weekend. The Patriots defeated Lithia Springs 14-6 with touchdowns coming from Alex Green on a one yard run and Terrance Roberts on an eight yard pass from Jake Turing. The Patriots had several turnovers while in scoring position but Coach Chip Walker felt the team improved in certain areas. Five different receivers caught passes in the win and Sebastian Heflin moved to tailback for the team and looked good. On defense, Rickey Nicholson and Tyler Betsill were among the standouts. Nicholson had three tackles for losses in the game. Sandy Creek (5-1) will play at Woodward Academy (3-3) on Friday. The Starrs Mill Panthers took on the East Coweta Indians last Friday and won 24-7. It was the least number of points Starrs Mill has allowed this year and they did it by limiting East Coweta to only eight plays in the second half. Starrs Mill got touchdowns from SirBrian Roberts, Brandon Witta and Robby Davis in addition to a field goal from Keegan Hanie. The Panthers put up close to 400 yards of offense in the win and dominated the Indians through and through. It was the most solid that all three units (offense, defense, special teams) have played together all year, said Coach Mike Earwood. But we have to eliminate the turnovers in the red zone. The Panthers fumbled and threw an interception within 10 yards of the Indians goal line in the win. On defense, Earwood credited Drew Morrisson, Daniel Beaman and Bradley Conner for playing well. Beaman had nine tackles on the night. Starrs Mill (6-1) will take on Mundys Mill (3-3) on Friday . Fayette County faced Lovejoy and put together a solid game to get the win over the Wildcats. The win was one of the biggest, if not the biggest, wins for the Tigers in recent memory. Channing Welchhad a touchdown, Jeremiah Enloe was very effective both running and passing and the defense got three turnovers. Fayette County (2-5) will take on East Coweta (3-3) on Friday McIntosh led the Northgate Vikings early and held them to only one touchdown in regulation. However, the Chiefs found themselves once again on the losing side in overtime against the Vikings. Brendan Hall scored the lone touchdown for the Chiefs on a quarterback keeper but it was the McIntosh defense that played really well. They gave up a big play early in the third quarter but managed to keep Northgate in check for much of the game. In overtime, Northgate scored and then held the Chiefs scoreless on their drive, as they threw an interception on fourth and long. McIntosh (2-4) hosts Creekside (6-0) on Friday. Our Lady of Mercys game against Whitefield Academy also went to overtime. The Bobcats and the Wolfpack were tied at 14 points a piece going into the extra period and a field goal by Whitefield gave them the region win. Mercy will play at Landmark on Friday. |
