Bad Links? | Tyrone planners nix funeral homeBy JOHN THOMPSON Sam Steins dream of opening a funeral home in Tyrone hit a bump in the road during last Thursdays Planning Commission meeting. The budding business owner wanted to use the former Mundys Pharmacy as the towns first funeral home. In order to do that, Stein said he needed the property rezoned from Commercial-2 to Limited Use Commercial. Even if you wanted to use the property as a pharmacy, you would have to have it rezoned since a pharmacy is not allowed in C-2, Stein said. Stein said he planned to comply with the towns overall architectural plans for the downtown area and said the site would resemble an old antebellum-style building with columns. But the residents attending Thursdays meeting were not keen on the idea of a funeral home downtown. Former Planning Commission member David Nebergall said he liked much of the towns plans for downtown, and did not think a funeral home was appropriate for the area. The design is good and very open to pedestrians. A funeral home is not a pedestrian-type business. This is not the right location, Nebergall said. Earl Hansard, who lives near the former pharmacy, was more blunt in his assessment of the situation. At our age, me and my mother would be awfully nervous having a funeral home next to us, he said. The Planning Commission unanimously voted to deny the rezoning. |
