Bad Links? | State gas tax moratorium scheduled to end tonightThe temporary state motor fuel tax moratorium will expire at midnight Friday. Beginning Saturday, distributors will collect approximately 15 cents more for each gallon of gas that they deliver into a retailers pumping tanks. Consumers should not see an immediate jump in gas prices because retailers will have to work through their current supply, on which they did not have to pay the states motor fuel taxes, said Georgia Revenue Commissioner Bart L. Graham. It is the reverse situation from when the moratorium went into effect. The price reduction was gradual as retailers worked through the taxed gas supply they had on hand. Commissioner Graham added that revenue agents would be checking gas prices around the state to ensure retailers are not charging prices that exceed their expenses plus their historical profit margins. The temporary moratorium stopped collection of the states 7.5 cents excise tax and the 7.5 cents state prepaid tax. Both taxes are collected by the distributor from the retailer when the gas is delivered. Gov. Sonny Perdue temporarily suspended the collection of the states motor fuel taxes beginning Sept. 2 to relieve some of the financial burden placed on Georgians by the disruptions of our fuel supply resulting from the effects of Hurricane Katrina. His action was ratified by the Georgia General Assembly Sept. 10.
