Bad Links? | PTC likely to allow modificationsBy JOHN MUNFORD The Peachtree City Council recently put on hold plans to regulate improvements made to golf carts. A new proposal is in the works that would not forbid modifications to golf carts, but would restrict the height and width of golf carts that can be operated on the path system, said City Spokesperson Betsy Tyler. The city already has a rule that golf carts cannot be driven on the path system if they can go more than 20 miles per hour. The original proposal would have forbid any modifications for speed, height and width beyond the original manufacturers specifications on the cart. Many have complained that would unduly restrict responsible golf cart owners in an effort to increase safety on the cart path system. City officials have contacted golf cart dealers and other businesses that modify carts for more information, and a new version of the ordinance will be considered at the CIty Council meeting Oct. 20. The main reason for the proposed changes is due to complaints of golf carts operated at high speeds on the cart path, and several carts which are jacked up so high that they scrape the tops of cart path tunnels, Tyler said. Some golf carts also have non-standard tires that are of some concern, Tyler added. The city is concerned about regulating golf carts because of the variety of other pedestrian and bicycle users that share the same cart paths, Tyler said. |
