Bad Links? | Local flag gets DAR recognition
She submitted Attinas flag for a Flag Certificate, a national award bestowed to citizens and business owners from the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Attina and his flag were recognized with the certificate in a small ceremony outside the store recently. The flag, which is 15 feet by 25 feet, sits atop a 60-foot flag pole, the highest pole the city allows. It was placed alongside a memorial outside of the store in honor of Dominic John Attina, the founder of Attinas Music, which has three area locations and is celebrating its 40th anniversary this December. Attina served in the Third Army for 22 years, serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. His family wanted to honor his service after he passed away three years ago and established the flag, believed to be one of the largest on display in the county. Attina was surprised to learn that his name as submitted for the national certificate and he appreciates the recognition. Jessel stated that she was always impressed by how it was cared for. We are always looking for ways to recognize people in the community, said Jessel, who added that the chapter recognized the Pit Stop in Peachtree City for their proper flying and care of the flag last year. For a flag to be recognized, it must be illuminated at night, flown properly and replaced or repaired if it becomes frayed. Attina said he learned a lot about flags once they put one up. The flag that hangs outside the store needs to be replaced once every six months and Attina added that they take it down during bad weather to make sure it does not get damaged. Attina never expected to be honored for the memorial to his father but he is proud to be the recipient of the certificate and the members of the General Daniel Newnan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution were glad they could help draw attention to a member of the community. |
