Bad Links? | County OKs rezoning for 2-acre lotsOfficials pass on conservation plan By JOHN MUNFORD After hearing a litany of complaints from nearby homeowners, the Fayette County Commission denied a rezoning petition for a conservation subdivision consisting of 32 homes on an 80-plus-acre tract in south Fayette. But the commission followed that with a unanimous vote approving an R-70 zoning, which will allow two-acre lot sizes. The countys land use plan designates the tract for residential development with lots between two and three acres in size. The conservation subdivision designation would allow for over half the site to be protected as greenspace, said David Hovey, who represented development company Humber Construction. But nearby residents complained about increased traffic, the influx of more students at nearby schools and other problems during the meeting. Many of those who took to the podium live on lots of five acres or more, and they said the proposed rezoning would damage the character of the community they live in. The vote to deny the rezoning was split 3-2, with commissioners Linda Wells and Peter Pfeifer and Chairman Greg Dunn voting in favor of denial. Commissioners A.G. VanLandingham and Herb Frady voted for the rezoning. The motion approving an R-70 zoning for the tract was approved unanimously. The property was previously rezoned for agricultural-residential use. |
