Bad Links? | Teams seek more region wins, better seedings in playoffs By MICHAEL BOYLAN There are a limited number of region games left for the local softball teams to enhance their standings heading into their region tournaments. Coaches would like to be seeded as highly as possible, but they would rather have their team playing their best as the tournament begins. All of the local softball teams are seeing bright spots as the post-season nears. Starrs Mill, currently ranked 10th in AAAAA in a GaSports.com coaches poll, has a 3-1 region record, along with Newnan, East Coweta and Union Grove. The Lady Panthers got some rest earlier this week before a match with third ranked Woodstock last night after the paper went to press. Tonight, they will play in a double header at Acworth Park. They will face Marietta at 6:30 p.m. and then will take on Hiram at 8 p.m. On Tuesday, Sept. 27, they will play a region game at home against Fayette County at 6:30 p.m. Fayette County followed their shutout win over McIntosh with a 3-0 region loss to Union Grove, which is ranked second in AAAAA. The Lady Tigers are starting to eliminate major mistakes that lead to big innings for their opponents and hope to get more hits and score more runs in the coming weeks. McIntosh picked up another region win on Tuesday by edging out Woodward Academy 2-1. On Wednesday they played at Kennesaw Mountain and yesterday they took on Douglas County at home. The Lady Chiefs are tied with Whitewater at 6-1 in the region and both teams are above Chapel Hill and Northgate, ranked fourth and eighth in AAAA respectively. The Lady Wildcats played in the Lassiter tournament last weekend and went 3-3. They started the tournament with a 5-1 loss to McEachern but followed it with a 4-1 win over Roswell. On Saturday morning, Whitewater defeated Marist, ranked 10th in AAAA, 6-0, before falling 5-0 to Woodland. Whitewater then defeated Lassiter, ranked seventh in AAAAA, 3-1 before falling to Harrison in the Silver Bracket championship game. Whitewater hosts Alexander on Monday, Sept. 26. Sandy Creek picked up a region win over Lithia Springs last Thursday, 9-0, but faced Chapel Hill earlier this week and lost -. the Lady Patriots hosted Woodward Academy last night and will play at Haralson County at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27. Sandy Creek has a region record of 2-4. Landmark Christian got a huge 1-0 victory over St. Francis last week with Kat Strickland driving in the wining run in the first inning with an RBI double and Ashley Chastain going the distance on the mound, giving up one hit and striking out seven batters. The Lady War Eagles followed the win with a 6-3 loss to Whitefield Academy. Landmark produced 12 hits, their most in a game this season, but stranded 10 runners. Chastain and Emily Cone each had three hits and 2 RBIs a piece. Chastain also struck out 11 batters, bring her season total to 102. Landmark Christian played at Mt. Zion, Carroll last night and will host Temple on Monday, Sept. 26 at 5 p.m. Our Lady of Mercy got a 15-14 win over Galloway last week and followed it with a 14-5 loss to Whitefield Academy. The win was an important region win for the Lady Bobcats and the offense is showing signs of heating up. They played at Mt. Paran last night and will play at Holy Innocents tomorrow at 1 p.m. They will host Landmark Christian next Thursday at 5 p.m. |
