Bad Links? | Big wins for Patriots, Wildcats, Chiefs and Panthers, others handed tough losses By MICHAEL BOYLAN For some local teams, it was a very good night. Sandy Creek came back to get a win over Chapel Hill and keep their home and regular season winning streak alive, while McIntosh and Starrs Mill each picked up ther first region win and Whitewater remained undefeated with a dominating performance over North Oconee. For other local teams, the news wasnt as good. Fayette County blew a lead over Newnan late in the game, Landmark dropped their second game in a row and Our Lady of Mercy, which put up more points than they had in any other game this season, still fell to Aquinas to remain winless. Sandy Creek (4-0) started the game with two big runs but the drive stalled out an a 43 yard field goal attempt was no good. Chapel Hill responded with a drive that lasted close to four minutes and ended with a 10 yard touchdown run. It was 7-0 after the first quarter and Chapel Hill would build a 14-7 lead before Sandy Creek would take over for good. Brent Brewer recovered a fumble and scored a touchdown, Kody Green would add another and kicker Michael Jones would connect on a 37 yard field goal attempt to give the Panthers a 24-21 win. Coach Chip Walker credited Corbin Miles for providing a spark on offense in relief of Maurice Jeffries, a sophomore who did well in his first start, and running backs Samson Horne and Brad Bush. The Patriots had over 200 yards rushing on the night and Walker feels that the offensive line gave their best performance of the season in the game. Defensively, Walker cited good play from defensive ends Fred Jones and E.J. Holt, as well as the linebacking corps and a number of other players. The Patriots will play at Douglas County (4-1) on Friday night. The Tigers loss came to Creekside. Whitewater (4-0) faced North Oconee at home on Friday night and won 56-15. The Wildcats piled up 466 yards of offense and Tavoris Dixon and Kurdice Neal each had over 60 yards rushing and a touchdown a piece. Quarterback Jay Bright was 4-for-4 for 75 yards and a touchdown. On defense, Cody Haralson had five tackles, while Joe Falkenbackhand Jerrod Richardson each had interceptions. Whitewater hosts Dutchtown (1-3) on Friday. It is their homecoming game. Starrs Mill (4-1) opened their region schedule with a 27-17 win over Union Grove. Down 10-7 at the half with their lone touchdown coming from Greg Davis, the Panthers were able to get second half touchdowns from Davis, quarterback Robby Davis and Brandon Witta, who finished with 103 yards rushing. Ryan Willis also contributed 95 yards rushing as Starrs Mill accumulated 388 total yards of offense in the win. Were glad to get the win and get that game behind us said Coach Mike Earwood of the homecoming game. Earwood felt that the entire defense played well for the most part. Drew Morrison stood out for the Panthers with 11 total tackles on the night, while Chad Gloer nabbed two interceptions. Antonio Brown and Branden Lewis were injured in the game but Earwood expects them both back for this Fridays game. Starrs Mill will take on Lovejoy (2-2) at Twelve Oaks stadium on Friday. McIntosh (1-3) played better than they had all season and came back from a deficit of 7-3 to win the game 27-18 over Alexander. Brett Buehler kicked two field goals, one for 30 yards and the other for 39 yards, while Jamael Owens rushed for two touchdowns and Morey Brooks rushed for one. Coach Butch Prosser felt the entire defensive effort was good and credited Casey Erickson for recovering two fumbles in the win. McIntosh hosts Lithia Springs (0-5) on Friday. It is their homecoming game. Its a tribute to our program that were fighting for or leading a game in the fourth quarter, said Coach Tommy Webb of his Fayette County Tigers (1-4) . The expectation now is to hold on for the wins. The Tigers had a 14 point lead over Newnan in the fourth quarter but saw it slip away. Channing Welch had two touchdowns and Jeremiah Enloe rushed for one, as the offense ut up 280 yards on the Cougar defense. The Tigers also got a touchdown when Alex Parsons blocked a punt and Michael Camerata picked up the ball and ran it in for a touchdown. Fayette County got good performances on defense with Jeremy Fowler and Kip Rossi each producing four tackles and an assist, while Andy Petty added five tackles and two assists, Jarett Crittenton added three tackles, three assists and six quarterbak pressures and Matt Burns added four tackles and two assists. The Tigers will play at Union Grove (4-1) on Friday. Landmark Christian (3-2) didnt follow up their loss to Bowdon the way they wanted to. The War Eagles found themselves bedeviled again, this time by the Bremen Blue Devils, who won 35-21. Matt Moody had a good night throwing the ball for Landmark, piling up 281 yards and throwing two touchdown passes to Miles King and one to Tommy Kinney. Unfortunately, he also threw two interceptions in the game. The War Eagles had difficulty running the ball, only gaining 42 total yards but five receivers caught passes with King leading them all with 144 yards and Jimmy Eden gaining 78 yards. Landmark hosts Mt. Zion, Carroll (2-3) this week. It will be their homecoming game. Our Lady of Mercy (0-5) fell behind Aquinas 28-0 in the first quarter after the opening kickoff was returned for a touchdown and a bad snap, an interception and a fumble all led to more scores for the Fighting Irish. The Bobcats came together in the second quarter and second half, trying to dig themselves out of the very big hole. Wynton Yates scored two touchdowns, Mike Donald added one on a 50 yard touchdown reception and Chris Gain recovered a fumble and ran it in for a touchdown in the final minute of the game. The Bobcats will play at Bowdon (4-1) on Friday. All games start at 7:30 p.m. |
