Bad Links? | Things change: Tennant challenges Brown, 3 others for PTC mayors postBy JOHN MUNFORD In Peachtree City, Mayor Steve Brown will face a field of five challengers in the November city election, including his one-time political ally, former City Councilman Dan Tennant. Five different persons qualified last week to run for two City Council seats. Among the other candidates for mayor are: Michael Arterburn, 33, of 315 Bradford Way, the general manager of Papa Johns in Sharpsburg. Phil Boswell, 51, of 117 Montclair Drive, a partner in an insurance and mortgage company. Harold K. Logsdon, 60, of 116 Morallion Hills, a financial planner. Dar Thompson, 43, of 408 Las Brasis Court, owner and president of World Gym (also known as Better Bodies Fitness). Tennant, 48, of 120 Ardenlee, is a regional manager for a sign manufacturing company. He previously served four years in Post 2 on the council after his election in 1999. He was defeated for reelection in 2003 by current Councilman Stuart Kourajian. Brown, 41, of 148 Terrane Ridge, lists his occupation as mayor on his qualifying documents. Under the citys charter, the position of mayor is considered a part-time post. Although incumbent Councilman Murray Weed has declined to run, three qualified for his seat: Daniel L. Gibbs, 41, of 141 Interlochen Drive, an information systems manager/attorney; Casimir Christian Lukjan, 21, of 119 Fielding Ridge, an anthropologist; and Cyndi Plunkett, 44, of 220 Independence Lane, an attorney and homemaker. Gibbs wife, Virginia, is the president of the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce. Steve Rapson, 42, of 112 St. Andrews Square, chief of staff for Fulton County Commission Chair Karen Handel, qualified to run again for his seat, and he will face just one challenger: Stephen W. Boone, 60, of 607 Spectrum Vista, an engineer and consultant. Peachtree Citys runoff election is slated for Tuesday, Dec. 6, and it will likely be necessary with such a large field of mayoral candidates. The election will probably not be nearly as interesting in Fayetteville, as only one of the three City Council seats up for grabs will be contested. Paul Oddo is challenging incumbent Al Hovey-King for the Post 5 seat, while the other two incumbents on the ballot, Walt White (Post 3) and Larry Dell (Post 4), are unopposed. Three incumbents in Brooks have qualified to run again: Mayor Bobby Butler and council members Lewis Harper and Jackie Carson. In Woolsey, incumbents Mayor Gary Laggis and Jack Gilson have qualified to run for another term. Running for the seat of Councilman Jerry Carpenter, which is open since he moved out of town, are C. Ron Smith, who has lived in Fayette County for 21 years and in Woolsey for three years, and Kenneth N. Wright, who has lived in Fayette County and Woolsey for three years. On the ballot in Tyrone are two seats on the Town Council. In Post 3, incumbent Lisa Richardson is being challenged by Grace Caldwell, Kevin Edwards, David Nebergall and Michael Server. In Post 4, Cary Dial and Gloria Furr will vie for the seat now held by Lyn Redwood, who is not running for another term. |
