Bad Links? | Lady Tigers pick up win over rivalsBy MICHAEL BOYLAN Fayette County didnt have the best weekend in the Cherokee tournament at Hobgood park and a 3-1 loss to Newnan on Tuesday stung a bit too, but the Lady Tigers were all smiles and laughs after handing their rivals, the McIntosh Lady Chiefs, a 4-0 loss on Wednesday, in what Coach Jill Joiner felt was the teams most complete ball game of the season. There was no let down tonight, said Joiner. Different people stepped up and everybody played well. The game was a battle as Fayette County had to face one Morgan Kidd, one of the top pitchers in the state. Kidd struck out the first five batters and sat down the Lady Tigers in order in the first three innings. Though Fayettes pitcher Britt Hammel-Cobb gave up two hits and a walk over the first three innings, her teammates backed her up with stellar defense. In the fourth inning, Ebony Baitey singled and reached third after a throwing error after a bunt. April Ward and Tori Owen both drove in runs in the inning. In the sixth inning, Rachel Barnes drove in two runs with an RBI double and the Lady Tigers shut the door on McIntosh with a 1-2-3 seventh inning. Hammel-Cobb gave up three hits, walked two batters and struck out two in the complete game victory. Joiner felt this was her best game of the year and was very pleased for her team. She also hopes that the girls take the confidence from the win and build towards the region tournament. Fayette County will play at Union Grove on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and will host Lovejoy at 6 p.m. next Thursday. |
