Bad Links? | Edgefield Bapt. issues photo scrapbookBy CAROLYN CARY Edgefield Baptist Church is celebrating its 135-plus years with the issuance of a photo scrapbook. It contains the history of the church and many of the photos in its archives. The church began at the edge of the field at what is now Hickory Drive and Ga. Highway 54. A large outcropping of granite sits behind a house on that corner. The church started just after the War Between The States by former slaves. It moved to its present location on Church Street in 1911. The Fellowship Hall, located next door, was built in 1955 and first served as school and a lodge hall. It was recently bricked and now serves as a meeting room and a pot luck dinner facility. Pastor Eddie Thomas was born and reared in Pensacola, Fla., and came to Atlanta in 1989 with $250 in his pocket. He eventually found his way to Fayetteville, and with his great-grandfather and grandfather serving in the ministry, it didnt take him long to decide the direction of his future. The mission statement of the church states: We are the salt of the earth, effecting a positive change, as we let our light shine that others may see a city on a hill that cannot be hidden. ... The cornerstone of our mission is to proclaim the gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for kingdom building. Sheree Smith served as chairman of the committee who worked diligently for six weeks to complete the project. The cost of the Photo Scrapbook is $20. The church donated one to the Fayette County Historical Society. The church is at 140 Church Street, with Sunday school each Sunday morning at 10 a.m. and the regular church service at 11:30 a.m. The church office can be reached at 770-461-7388.
