Bad Links? | Teams pick up important region wins this week By MICHAEL BOYLAN A win is nice any time you get one, but any coach will tell you that region wins feel a little better than most. McIntosh, Starrs Mill and Whitewater all picked up region wins this week. The McIntosh varsity softball team improved to 8-5-1 on Tuesday with a 4-1 victory over Alexander. The two teams played each other to a scoreless tie until the sixth inning. Alexander took a 1-0 lead but the Lady Chiefs answered with four runs of their own. Holly Houghton singled and reached third after a throwing error on Kelsey Dawsons bunt. Amelia Beach hit an RBI double, Jessica Conaway singled and Erin Milani drove in two runs after her base hit was mishandled in the outfield. Morgan Kidd picked up the win for McIntosh with 14 strikeouts. The Lady Chiefs were not as fortunate on Wednesday, falling to their county rivals, the Fayette County Lady Tigers 4-0. Kidd was impressive once again, striking out 12 batters, including the first five she faced, but errors in the fourth and sixth innings led to the Lady Tigers four runs. Beach, Houghton and Erin Milani each had singles in the loss. They were the only three hits that Fayettes Britt Hammel-Cobb allowed. McIntosh, currently 4-1 in region 4-AAAA, hosted Villa Rica last night and will play at Woodward Academy at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Fayette County will host Union Grove at 5:30 on Tuesday. Starrs Mill is in the middle of a nine game winning streak in which they have also posted five shutouts. On Tuesday, the Lady Panthers shutout East Coweta 1-0 in nine innings and on Wednesday they won another game in the ninth inning by defeating Walton 3-1. Lindsay Walker drove in the winning run in the ninth against East Coweta and Amanda Howett pitched all nine innings, struck out five batters and picked up the win. In the Walton game, Paige Peuirfoy went the distance, giving up three hits and striking out two. Rosa drove in a run in the eighth inning but Walton tied it in the bottom of the inning. In the ninth, Rebecca Aszman singled and Rachel Watson walked, leaving the bases loaded for Walker, who singled and drove in two runs. Starrs Mill, currently 3-1 in region 4-AAAAA, hosts Woodstock next Thursday at 5 p.m. Whitewater got a huge win on Tuesday by defeating Chapel Hill for the first time in the history of their program. The 5-4 win vaulted the Lady Wildcats to a 5-1 region 4-AAAA record and placed them above Chapel Hill, who currently has a 4-1 region record. Ashley Pedersen pitched all nine innings of the game and Chapel Hills first two runs were due to Whitewater errors. What impressed Coach Stacey Smith was that the team was able to bounce back and come from behind in the biggest game of the young careers. In the international tie-breaker, Chapel Hill scored first but Whitewater got the win after Megan Glaize put down a but giving them runners on first and third. The tying run came on an RBI from Jill Keller and the winning run came on a passed ball. Whitewater played at Douglas County last night and will play McEachern and Roswell at the east Cobb Complex tonight at 6:45 and 8:30 p.m. respectively. |
