Bad Links? | Top teams tough for War Eagles, Bobcats and Tigers, while Panthers, patriots and Wildcats survive some wild games By MICHAEL BOYLAN Last Friday nights games had their share of drama. Landmark got outgunned by the top ranked Bowdon Red Devils, McIntosh held a 2-0 lead late against Sandy Creek before falling and Starrs Mill defeated Tri-Cities with less than a minute to go. The other games with local teams involved saw Whitewater stay unbeaten with a 12-7 win over Carver, Atlanta, while both Fayette County and Our Lady of Mercy lost games against some very tough opponents. Landmark Christian entered Friday nights game ranked second in Class A in the GaSports.com poll. Bowdon scored early and often and led the War Eagles 21-7 early in the second quarter and 34-14 by the end of the half. Jimmy Edens scored the first touchdown for Landmark and quarterback Matt Moody scored the second touchdown with a 44 yard touchdown run with less than two minutes remaining in the first half to cut the lead to 31-14. Bowdon set up yet another scoring drive, capped off by a 37 yard field goal. The second half saw a re-energized Landmark team force Bowdon to punt twice and the War Eagles drove 59 yards, to the Bowdon one yard line before a fumble changed the momentum for the duration of the game. Bowdon scored less than four minutes into the fourth quarter and kicked a field goal shortly afterwards to make it 44-14. Landmark drove again and Moody capped it off with his second touchdown run of the night. They would not score again and the final was 44-21. Landmark (3-1) now ranked seventh in Class A in the GaSports.com coaches poll will play at Bremen (4-0), currently ranked third in the Class A poll, on Friday. After a scoreless first half, McIntosh took a 2-0 lead off of a safety in the third quarter. Anthony Caldwell was the first in the tackle on the safety and six other Chief defenders joined him. Sandy Creek struck back late in the third quarter after Corbin Miles, the backup quarterback for the Patriots, ran 10 yards for a touchdown to put Sandy Creek ahead. The Patriots never looked back. Samson Horne rushed for 78 yards and two touchdowns, Alex Green rushed for one touchdown and the Patriots won 28-8. McIntoshs touchdown came on an 11 yard pass from brian Wolfe to Nick Nelson. While there wasnt much offense for the Chiefs, Coach Butch Prosser felt the defense played tremendous. Casey Erickson recovered two fumbles and Caldwell and Buehler led the team in tackles. The Sandy Creek defense intercepted McIntosh five times with Stephan Atrice picking up two interceptions and Brent Brewer, Miles and Tyler Betsill each adding one. Aybid Coleman led the Patriot defense with nine tackles. Jake Turing, the Sandy Creek stating quarterback injured his shoulder in the firs thalf and is questionable for Fridays game. Maurice Jeffries, the Patriots usual number two quarterback, ws injured in practice last week but should be available this Friday. Sandy Creek (3-0) hosts Chapel Hill (2-1) on Friday, while McIntosh (0-3) plays at Alexander (1-3). Starrs Mill had their hands full with Tri-Cities and though the Panthers pulled out a 35-34 victory thanks to a 26 yard touchdown reception by Brandon Witta with close to 30 seconds remaining, Coach Mike Earwood felt it was a sub-par performance from both the offense and defense with a few bright spots thrown in. Antonio Brown rushed for 127 yards, which was close to half of Starrs Mills total offensive output and Earwood credited quarterback Robby Davis and Witta, who also had a touchdwn run of three yards in the first half, with both having good games as well. On defense, Earwood heaped praise on Austin Watts, who finished with 14 tackles. He played a great game, said Earwood. It was the game of a lifetime. Earwood also stated that kicker Keegan Hanie had a good night, connecting on all of his extra point attempts and drilling the ball on kickoffs. Starrs Mill (3-1) begins their region schedule this Friday with a home game against Union Grove (4-0). Fayette County faced Carrollton at home last Friday and lost 35-0. The Tigers allowed 14 points in the first quarter and then didnt allow any more points until the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, the Tigers fumbled, setting up a short scoring drive for the Trojans and then allowed two punt returns to be run back for touchdowns to give Carrollton the 35-0 win. Fayette County welcomed Jeremiah Enloe back as quarterback and he threw for 64 yards, while Channing Welch led the team in rushing with 21 yards. On defense, Jared Ctrittenton recovered a fumble and Matt Burns, Kip Rossi and Matt Daniel all played well. Burns had seven solo tackles and four assits, while Rossi had six solo tackles and five assists and Daniel had four solo tackles and five assists. Fayette County (1-3) hosts Newnan (1-3) on Friday. It is their homecoming game. Whitewater outlasted a tough Carver,Atlanta team 12-7 on Friday to keep the Wildcats undefeated this season. Tavoris Dixon scored the lone touchdown for Whitewater with Jordan Cooper adding a field goal and the defense getting a safety. Carver scored in the third quarter to cut the lead to five points but the Wildcat defense held them off to give the team the win. Whitewater hosts North Oconee this Friday. Our Lady of Mercy hosted Bremen last Friday in their homecoming game and lost 62-7. The Bobcats continue to make costly mistakes against good teams. They got their touchdown in the first quarter when Juston Bryan connected on a 60 yard touchdown pass to Wynton Yates. The teams were tied 7-7 late in the quarter but an offisdes penalty on Our Lady of Mercy gave a Bremen drive new life and they scored. There were several other mistakes that the young team made that led to moe Bremen scores. The Bobcats (0-4) will play at Aquinas (2-1) this Friday. |
