Bad Links? | Auto break-ins on the increase in PTC and all over FayetteBy JOHN MUNFORD Auto break-ins are on the rise in unincorporated Fayette County and Peachtree City, and officials are warning residents not to leave valuables in their cars which might tempt criminals to strike. At least two, sometimes three or four such break-ins are being reported each night, said Lt. Col. Bruce Jordan, director of investigations for the Fayette County Sheriffs Office. In some cases, burglars are breaking in to get laptops and billfolds that are left in cars overnight, he added. The break-ins are happening all over the county, not just in any one particular area, Jordan said. In Peachtree City, criminals entered numerous vehicles in the Dover Square, The Arbors and The Coventry subdivisions sometime between Saturday evening and early Sunday morning. In addition to bringing valuables inside, citizens are urged to make sure to lock their vehicle doors, police said. Some of the stolen items have been turning up in Atlanta, making it likely that some of the perpetrators are full-time criminals, Jordan said. Responding to complaints where valuables have been left in plain sight in a vehicle is frustrating to deputies, Jordan admitted. In some cases, the criminals are breaking windows to gain access, Jordan said. Other times, they pry the windows down to gain entry, he added. |
