Bad Links? | Relief effortsGirl Scouts load truck in FayettevilleBring supplies for hurricane victims to the Hobby Lobby / Krystal Parking lot on Ga. Hwy. 85 in Fayetteville Saturday, Sept. 10. Girl Scout Troop 511 of the Ga. Pine Valley Council is organizing this relief effort which will hand deliver collected items to those who are most in need. The troop asks people to donate bottled water, Gatorade and Powerade, clothes for both adults and children, tooth brushes, tooth paste, diapers, formula, baby food, toilet paper feminine products, wipes hand sanitizer, soap, shampoo, combs, brushes and prayers. Other items they would like to have include coloring books, stufed animals. pillows, sleeping bags, blankets, notebooks, pens, pencils, tents, fans, batteries, flashlights and more. They are also asking for help with their journey and are asking for large, strong boxes for organizing donated goods, permanent markers to label boxes, help with the cost of fuel for the donated tractor trailers and volunteers to help load the trucks and spread the word. Deputies stage drive at Wal-MartThe Fayette County Sheriffs Department will accept donations for the Fayette County Department of Family and Children Services in a hurricane relief drive at the Fayette Pavilion Wal-Mart Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. DFCS is the lead agency assisting the high volume of evacuees who are seeking help in the area. Primary needs are for gift cards so families can buy food, clothing and gas. A list of all requested items will be available at the donation site. Bake sale, donation drive benefits relief effortsIf you have a sweet tooth and want to help victims of Katrina, plan to attend Stonebriar Subdivisions Bake Sale Benefit on Saturday, Sept. 17. In addition to selling brownies, cookies, cakes and other sweets, Stonebriar residents will collect non-perishable food, new underwear and socks and clothing for misplaced victims now in Fayette County. All funds raised will be deposited into a special Hurricane Relief Fund managed by the Fayette Department of Family and Children Services. All goods will be given to The Real Life Center, a ministry of Peachtree Citys Dogwood Church, and distributed to victims. Awesome Adventures has donated an inflatable castle and children are asked to bring their piggy banks and make a donation to jump. This event is also supported by Fayetteville First United Methodist's Sunday/Monday Connection Sunday School class. Car/bike wash to rise money for victimsUnrestricted Ryders Motorcycle Club and Personal Touch Mobile Detailers are sponsoring a car/bike wash to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at Cycle Specialty in Fayetteville. Unrestricted Ryders M/C is a newly formed motorcycle club based in Clayton County and led by President Daran Casey. The club is dedicated to serving their community and helping mankind. Mitchell Gibbs, owner of Personal Touch Mobile Detailers, is also a member of the club. The sponsors recognize how Hurricane Katrina has devastated and claimed the lives of thousands of people, and they want to help those individuals affected by the wrath of the storm as much as possible. They will be accepting donations of toiletries, clothes, non-perishable items, money, and any other items that may benefit those in need. Catholics respond to crisisThe Catholic Church of St. Gabriel is taking up a collection for hurricane victims at the request of Atlanta Archbishop Wilton Gregory. Many residents in the New Orleans and surround areas are Catholic and are calling upon local Catholic churches for assistance. Also the church is working closely with Square Foot ministries on building an addition on the home of a local home where many family members from the Louisiana area have come to stay. Methodists need health kits, flood bucketsNorth Fayette United Methodist Church and Hopewell UMC are collecting health kits and flood buckets for the Red Cross and the United Methodist Committee on Relief. A health kit will cost about $12 to put together and will include the following items: hand towel, wash cloth, comb, nail file or fingernail clippers, bath-size bar of soap, toothbrush, large tube of toothpaste, and bandaids. Please put these items in a sealed one-gallon plastic bag. Do not include money, notes or any other literature. These kits may be brought to North Fayette UMC, 847 New Hope Rd., Fayetteville, Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 4:30 or to Hopewell UMC, 351 Jenkins Rd. For hours at Hopewell, call 770-306-7537. Fayetteville 1st UMC accepts donationsFirst United Methodist Church in Fayetteville is accepting donations on behalf of the United Methodist Committee on Relief. It provides relief to disaster areas with 100 percent of the tax deductible gift going toward the project you designate. Checks can be made to FFUMC, with hurricane relief on the memo line. McDonough Rd Baptist collects moneyMcDonough Road Baptist Church is collecting funds which will be sent in total to the Georgia Baptist Katrina Disaster Relief Fund. For further information call 770-460-5423. Governor asks churches for helpGov. Sonny Perdue asked faith-based organizations to designate a point-of-contact for the disaster relief effort and to provide their contact information to the state of Georgia by logging onto www.connections.org. The Department of Community Affairs, with the assistance of the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, will coordinate with each point-of-contact to match offers of resources and volunteers with relief efforts that are currently underway. Perdue and members of Georgias faith community announced today a statewide collaborative effort to provide long-term relief for displaced evacuees from Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Faith-based partners will help us channel goodwill to where it can benefit the most. I encourage every local congregation to designate your point-of-contact and join this effort, said Perdue.
