Bad Links? | Local football players shine in first week of college schedule By MICHAEL BOYLAN The first week of the college football season gave formerly local kickers a chance to shine. John Deraney, a Fayette County graduate now attending North Carolina State University, kicked three field goals and one extra point in the Wolfpacks 20-16 loss to Virginia Tech. His longest field goal was a 35 yarder. Chris James, a Starrs Mill graduate now kicking for Western Kentucky University, was 9-for-9 on extra point attempts in the schools 63-3 win over West Virginia Tech. Larry Beard, a Sandy Creek graduate, had one tackle for Georgia Southern in their 41-38 overtime win over Northeastern. Darrell Burston, a Starrs Mill graduate, had three assisted tackles in Florida States 10-7 win over Miami on Monday night. Charles Castleberry, a McIntosh graduate, had one rushing attempt for eight yards for the University of Minnesota, Crookston in their 77-0 loss to South Dakota. Jason Earwood, a Starrs Mill graduate, had five solo tackles and two assists for Georgia Southern in their 41-38 overtime win over Northeastern. Calvin Johnson, a Sandy Creek graduate now a sophomore receiver for Georgia Tech, had four catches for 66 yards and a touchdown in Techs 23-14 win over Auburn.
