Bad Links? | Civil rights heritage stamps unveiled hereBy CAROLYN CARY The courage and achievement of the men and women who struggled to bring the vision of the nations founders closer to reality during the civil rights movement is recognized on a pane of 10 stamps. It is entitled To Form A More Perfect Union. This effort was recognized at a stamp unveiling ceremony held at Flat Rock AME Church in Fayetteville Thursday morning. It is the oldest Black church in Fayette County, constituted in 1854. The master of ceremonies was Doris Roden, Fayetteville Postmaster. The Rev. Edward Johnson Jr., pastor of Flat Rock AME, welcomed those present. He is also president of the Fayette County NAACP. U.S Rep. John Lewis was on hand and said, In order to form a more perfect union, we must forget the past and work towards the future. We must do this in concert with all our brothers and sisters, regardless of their race, color, or creed. Also on hand was state Sen. Valencia Seay, who represents Fayette County in the 34th District. Seay spoke along with the Rev. Michael Baldwin of Christians For Change Baptist Church in Riverdale. The stamps are available at all post offices. |
