Bad Links? | Workshops to demonstrate ins and outs of compostingFulton County residents can learn how to effectively use yard trimmings and other waste to enrich dry and hard soil by participating in two September workshops on composting. Fulton County Extension Service Agent Lynwood Blackman will show residents how to save money, protect the environment and enjoy beautiful gardens. The first workshop will be Thursday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. at the North Fulton ServiceCenter, 7741 Roswell Road. The second workshop will be Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. at theSouth Fulton Service Center at 5600 Stonewall Tell Road in College Park. Landscape refuse such as leaves, grass clippings and trimmings account for up to 20 percent of landfill waste according to the University of Georgia. Current gardening practices favor composting to enrich the soil rather than chemical treatments in order to protect the environment from pollution. The workshops are sponsored by the Fulton County Department of Environment and Community Developments Office of Environmental Affairs, the Clean Water Campaign and the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. The workshops are free. Interested residents can register online at www.cleanwatercampaign.com or call 404-463-3259.
