Bad Links? | 2 seriously hurt in bus crashTwo people were critically injured when their car crashed into the rear end of a Fayette County school bus on Ga. Highway 314 north near North Fayette Drive late Tuesday afternoon. None of the students who were on the bus had serious injuries, and none required transport in an ambulance, officials said. Another three passengers in the car were taken to area hospitals with injuries that weren't believed to be life-threatening, said Deputy Chief Allen McCullough of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services. The crash forced the car under the rear of the bus, trapping the two worst-injured patients in the front of the passenger compartment until a wrecker lifted the bus enough for medics to extricate the victims. Once the two victims were removed from the vehicle, they were stabilized on the scene and transported to Grady Hospital in Atlanta via two Emory Flight helicopters, McCullough said. More than a dozen paramedics and firefighters from Fayette County and Fayetteville aided the victims at the scene. None of the victims' identities were available Tuesday night. All northbound and southbound lanes on Hwy. 314 were blocked for quite some time as the victims were tended to and wreckers removed the bus and the smashed car. McCullough said it was fortunate that Fayette Wrecker was able to respond so quickly to help lift the rear of the bus. Before the wrecker arrived, crews worked to put cribbing under the bus so it could be lifted with a pneumatic system. |
