Bad Links? | Rezoning OKd in FayettevilleBy BEN NELMS Fayetteville council members Thursday approved a rezoning request that will bring a mixed-use development to South Glynn Street and recognized the Finance Department for their participation in the city receiving a national financial certification. The council approved a rezoning request by Barnard and Associates to change the zoning at 235 S. Glynn Street and 245 S. Glynn Street from C-3 to C-1. The change allows a mixed use development designed to include retail, residential and office space. The 235 S. Glynn tract comprises .98 acres while the 345 S. Glynn tract consists of 1.19 acres. City Planner Eldridge Gunn said the two historic homes on the site will be saved with new structures of compatible architecture constructed behind them, according to an Aug. 8 memo. All structures will share parking, which is expected to the Travis House on the north and potential new development or redevelopment on the south, he said. The project is a good mix for the Main Street area, Gunn added. The houses were formerly used as antique stores. This is just an outstanding project for redevelopment, said Mayor Kenneth Steele. Im quite pleased that Mr. Barnard is coming forward with this plan. The Planning & Zoning Commission recommended approval of the request at its July 26 meeting. The mayor and council acknowledged Finance Director Lynn Robinson and her staff as instrumental for the city receiving a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association. Steele said Robinson and her staff were instrumental in the city achieving the certification. This is the ninth consecutive year the city has received the certification. The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management, City Manager Joe Morton said in an Aug. 22 memo. Also at the meeting, the board approved licenses for the sale of beer, wine and distilled spirits to La Hacienda #3, Inc. at 365 Fayette Place and Onyx Restaurant at 750 N. Glynn Street. |
