Bad Links? | Starrs Mill and McIntosh teams get first wins of season By MICHAEL BOYLAN The McIntosh Lady Chiefs now have a record of 2-1. They began the season with a 1-0 loss to East Coweta but evened their record at 1-1 with a 5-2 win over Northgate this past Tuesday. Pitcher Morgan Kidd got the win and the Lady Chiefs got runs early against the Lady Vikings. On Wednesday, McIntosh began play in a tournament at Peachtree Ridge High School and got their second consecutive win by defeating Peachtree Ridge 1-0. They will play in a double header tonight against Berkmar and South Forsyth with games beginning at 5 p.m. Next week they will host Lithia Springs at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Fayette County on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Chiefs will be led by Kidd, a sophomore pitcher, who has the ability to take over a game on the mound. In the East Coweta game, Kidd threw five scorelss innings and struck out seven batters. Offensively, McIntosh hopes to get solid games from Amelia Beach and Jocelyn Clarke among a number of others. They are coached by Kristy Lewis, a McIntosh alumni. Starrs Mill opened their season with a 2-0 loss to Union Grove on Tuesday with Amanda Howett geting the start and Paige Peurifoy pitching the final two innings. On Wednesday night, the Lady Panthers fell to Brookwood 2-1 before defeating Blessed Trinity 3-0. Howett got the win against Blessed Trinity. Tonight Starrs Mill will take on North Gwinnett on the road. They will host South Gwinnett on Monday at 6:30 p.m. and will follow it with a home game against Lovejoy on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Starrs Mill is looking to have a particularly good season in 4-AAAAA; their final one before dropping to region 4-AAAA next year. They have nine seniors on the squad and eight returning starters from last year including Howett and Peurifoy who will share pitching duties. Among the key players for the Lady Panthers are Holly Oglesbee, shortstop Lindsey Walker, outfielder Lynsey Tedford. Coach Mark Williamson is also hoping to get a big season from catcher Lauren Marchman, who gained a lot of varsity experience last year as Rebecca Aszman sat out most of the season with an injury. It is early in the 2005 season but both teams have their sights on the state playoffs. The games they play in the coming weeks will help these teams prepare. |
