Bad Links? | Most locals looking for first win of season By MICHAEL BOYLAN Fayette County (0-1) @ Jonesboro (0-1) (Tara Stadium), 7:30 p.m. The Tigers had a less than stellar first half against Upson Lee last week but came out firing on all cylinders in the third quarter. Brandon Boykin rushed for two touchdowns and the Tigers tied the game at 14 by the end of the quarter. In the fourth, Fayette County saw Upson Lee take over and sustain a drive that put them ahead for good. Tonight, Fayette County plays a scrappy Jonesboro team that will fight for the duration of the game. Jonesboro lost to Mundys Mill 28-15 last week. The Fayette County Tigers will have to play all four quarters like they did in the third quarter of last weeks game. It was a time when the defense tackled crisply and everyone made key blocks to keep drives going and turn good plays into great plays. McIntosh (0-1) vs. Villa Rica (0-1), 7:30 p.m. Quarterback Brendan Hall led the Chiefs with two rushing touchdowns last week and McIntosh only trailed Douglas County by six points at the half. The Chiefs allowed too many big plays in the second half though and Douglas County added 29 more points to the final score. Coach Prosser is hoping to have a more solid night defensively tonight. Villa Rica had trouble moving the ball last week against Sandy Creek in a 14-7 loss. Their lone touchdown came late in the fourth quarter and it marked one of the few times they had moved the ball into Sandy Creek territory in the game. Our Lady of Mercy (0-1) @ Walker (1-0), 7:30 p.m. Last year, Walker edged out Our Lady of Mercy 14-13. The Bobcats are fired up about their chance to aenge that loss and earn their first win of the season. Mercy lost to Pacelli 41-0 last week and while they likely lost Kendall Augustine for the season to a broken ankle, Coach Bill Schmitz saw some positive things from both his offense and defense and feels confident heading into their second game of the season. Walker defeated Whitefield Academy 10-7 last Friday. Starrs Mill (0-1) vs. Pebblebrook (0-0), 7:30 p.m. Last Saturdays loss to McEachern was a painful one for Starrs Mill in more ways than one. Their defense only allowed McEachern to gain 123 yards of offense, yet they still lost 13-8, and Trevor duPont who had rushed for over 100 yards broke his right femur and will not play for the remainder of the season. The Panthers hope to rebound tonight with a win against the Falcons. If their defense plays as stout as they did last week, while eliminating turnovers that were costly, the Panthers should earn the win. Starrs Mill defeated Pebblebrook 35-13 last week. Whitewater (1-0) vs. Heard County (1-0), 7:30 p.m. Whitewater is a bigger, stronger and faster team than they were last year with a deeper bench now that some sophomores are getting playing time. The Wildcat had three touchdowns from Tavoris Dixon, one from Chris Asbury and one from Jonathan Jaurigue in their 35-0 romp over Temple. The Whitewater defense also played particularly well and Coach Amos McCraery hopes to see similar performances tonight, especially as they face a Heard County team with hopes of winning a region title in 4-AA. Heard County picked up a region win last week by beating Callaway 13-6. Landmark Christian (1-0) at Cross Keys (0-1), (North DeKalb stadium) Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Landmark Christian, now ranked second in Class A, beat up on Twiggs County last week. In doing so, they saw quarterback Matt Moody throw for 232 yards and three touchdowns; two to Miles King and one to Jimmy Eden. The defense also played solid by not allowing Twiggs to mount much of an offense. If the trends on both sides of the ball continues this week, Landmark should have no problem earning another win this weekend. Cross Keys lost to Druid Hills 7-6 last week. |
