Bad Links? | Big burns banned in Peachtree CityBy JOHN MUNFORD Developers will no longer be allowed to burn off debris after clearing large commercial properties and subdivisions in Peachtree City. The City Council voted to eliminate such burn permits because of problems that cropped up the last time one was issued, for the second phase of the Kedron Village shopping center, which will include a Target store. Ash and debris from the burn was carried in the air, landing on cars, patios and other property at nearby homes, said Fire Marshal John Dailey. Ultimately, Dailey stopped the burn activity after spending a few hours substantiating the complaints. City officials said several developers were contacted and agreed it wouldnt cause a hardship to get rid of the burning process altogether. Mayor Steve Brown noted that developers can hire machines that will turn harvested trees into wood chips. In the past four years, only six large-scale burn permits were issued, Dailey reported. The wood chips can be left on site to help with erosion control, Dailey added. |
