Bad Links? | Pocket bikes OK for some parking lotsBy JOHN MUNFORD Pocket bikes and other motorized play vehicles can now be used on commercial and industrial zoned property in Peachtree City. The change was adopted by the Peachtree City Council Thursday, allowing pocket bikes to be used on commercial and industrial zoned property such as parking lots, as long as the driving areas arent accessible to public traffic. Another change enacted by council allows homeowners associations to regulate usage of motorized play vehicles on their property. The vehicles are still banned from use on public roads and the citys golf cart path system. Pocket bikes, which ride low to the ground and can operate at speeds of 35 miles per hour or greater, are difficult to see because of their size, officials have said. Also, pocket bikes are classified as toys and thus dont have to meet any safety standards such as helmet requirements, turn signals and brake lights. The original ordinance passed several weeks ago requires distributors of pocket bikes to provide information on the citys ordinance along with a disclaimer that they cannot be driven on public streets or the cart path system. Police officers occasionally see pocket bikes being operated illegally on the golf cart path system, officials said. |
