What do you think of this story? Bad Links? | SCSO Kicks Off 15th Season with a Southeastern PremiereThe Southern Crescent Symphony Orchestra has announced the schedule for 2005-2006 - its 15th season. The community orchestra, under the direction of founder Dr. Richard Bell, begins the season with a Southeastern premiere. On November 11 and 12, SCSO and the Landmark Christian School Chorus with guest soloists (directed by Mark Smith) present King David Oratorio - music by Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast), book and lyrics by Tim Rice (The Lion King and Evita). This project was inspired by the life of Israels greatest king to celebrate Jerusalems 3,000th anniversary in 1996. King David Oratorio has only been performed in New York and Dallas. The Oratorio will be presented at the Coweta County Centre for the Performing and Visual Arts and is expected to sell out both nights. Tickets will be available at Park Ave. Bank (Stockbridge and McDonough), through SCSO members, and from Landmark Christian School. Prices range from $25 - $60. Thursday and Friday, November 17 and 18, SCSO will partner with Henry County student choruses for Mozarts arrangement of Handels Messiah at the Henry County Schools Performing Arts Center. Mozart adapted the 17th Century oratorio to 18th Century orchestration and singing style. The Messiah performances are free. Peter and the Wolf will be performed Saturday, February 18, in collaboration with Atlanta Festival Ballet. In this light-hearted, narrated childrens story each character is represented by a musical instrument. In this performance, each character will also be portrayed by a dancer. Peter and the Wolf was written by Sergei Prokiev (1891 - 1953), known as one of the greatest composers of the 20th Century. This concert will also feature the Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra. Tickets: $12 adults, $8 seniors and students. Friday, April 21, SCSO will wrap up the season by hosting the winners of the Coweta-Fayette Music Teachers Piano Competition in presenting three movements of Mozarts Piano Concerto in F Major and Wagners Siegfried Idyll at Spivey Hall, on the campus of Clayton College and State University in Morrow. The April 21 concert is free. The SCSO will hold auditions Tuesday, August 23, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. in the Lovejoy High School band room. Musicians interested in auditioning should call Dr. Richard Bell at 770-389-1625 to make an appointment. | |
