Bad Links? | Election, rezoning on Fayetteville agendaBy BEN NELMS Items for the Aug. 18 meeting of the Fayetteville City Council will be few in number, with council members considering a rezoning request on South Glynn Street, a franchise extension with Georgia Power and a call for the Nov. 8 election. The first of two public hearings will be a request for rezoning for property located at 235 and 245 South Glynn. Barnard and Associates is requesting a change from C-3 to C-1 to allow a mixed use development to include office, retail and residential units, according to an Aug. 8 memo from City Planner Eldridge Gunn. The two historic homes on the site will be saved, with new structures featuring compatible architecture to be constructed behind them. All structures will share parking, which is envisioned to connect to the Travis House to the north and to potential new development to the south, Gunn said. Fayetteville Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval of the rezoning July 26. A second public hearing involves a proposed ordinance to to amend the Georgia Power franchise agreement. Georgia Power is requesting a 20-year extension of the current agreement approved in 1987 with a 30-year term. If approved, the new term would be in effect for 32 years, said City Manager Joe Morton in an Aug. 9 letter. Based on a recent agreement between Georgia Power and Georgia Municipal Association, the utility will be responsible for the relocation of distribution facilities within the citys rights-of-way for non-beautification projects regardless of Georgia Powers prior rights and/or easements, Morton said. Georgia Power will not be responsible for the relocation of distribution facilities for beautification projects such as streetscapes and sidewalks and certain other facility relocations, he said. The only new business item on the agenda is a call for the Nov. 8 election. The council seats for Posts 3, 4 and 5 will expire, with qualifying for those seats occurring Sept. 12-14. Expiring seats include those held by Post 3 council member Walt White, Post 4 council member Larry Dell and Post 5 council member Al Hovey-King. The deadline for voter registration for the Nov. 8 election is Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. |
