Bad Links? | Fayette County hopes to overcome adversity, improve on poor records of past few tears By MICHAEL BOYLAN The Fayette County Tigers wont be starting the season with their entire team intact but Coach Tommy Webb has been pleased with the way his team has performed in practices and the jamborees and feels good about the upcoming season. Though Jeremiah Enloe was supposed to be the starting quarterback for the Tigers, arthroscopic surgery will sideline the senior for at least the next four weeks. That leaves Brandon Boykin and Tyler Satterfield to battle it out for the starting position in his absence. Webb stated that he will decide on one of these players to start their first game of the season with the hope of giving his team some continuity. Senior Channing Welch will lead the ground game for Fayette County. He was the regions second leading rusher last year and will be aided by wingbacks Kyle Freeman, Alex Parsons and Jeremy Fowler. Webb has also seen good things from receivers Brandon Henderson, Jayvon Holt and Jamal Daniel. With a balanced attack, the Tigers should be able to put up more points this year. Jimmy Chavez returns to bring experience to the offensive line and senior Jarrett Crittenton is also being counted on to help out a fairly young and inexperienced line. The Tigers have a lot of new faces on defense but standouts this offseason have been linebackers Kip Rossi, Joshua Sumpter and Matt Burns. The entire defensive line from last year is being replaced but Audy Whittington, Chris Stallings, Johnnie Cannon and Deandre Thomas have shown they are capable on the defensive front. Andy Petty and Jamal Daniel are doing well in the secondary and Freeman and Fowler may see some time at cornerback this year as well. Webb also cited good play in practices from transfer student Kevin Finn, a defensive end and tight end. One player that Webb is very excited about and could be key to the Tigers success this year is kicker Barrett Ratliff. He is one of the best kickers in the region, said Webb. If all goes well, we should be able to do some neat things, pushing the opponents offense back in their own territory and winning the battle of field position. A lot of players have seen some playing time in the jamborees and the coaches will be making their final decisions on starters this week during practices. The team is playing with a lot of spirit and it is clear to anyone observing the Tigers practices that they are having fun. |
