St. Gabriels Catholic Church plans football kickoff barbecueThe Catholic Church of Saint Gabriel will kick off the upcoming fall football season with an all-day, fund-raising barbecue (rain or shine) Saturday, Aug. 20, from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m., on the church grounds on Antioch Road off Ga. Hwy. 92 South. Barbecue plates, including pork sandwiches, baked beans, corn and bread, will cost $7. Hot dog plates will cost $5. Drinks and desserts will be available but are not included in the cost. Plates will be available for both eat-in and take-out. In addition to the barbecue, the event will offer games and prizes. Organizers say they hope to have memorabilia and prizes representing teams from all over the southeast and several activities for children. Cooking the barbecue and co-coordinating the event will be Mike Radcliff, owner of Running Bear BBQ. Radcliff also is a member of the churchs basketball and softball teams and was recently voted the best defensive player on the current mens softball team. He also is a barbecue fund-raising veteran of many events in the Fayette area. We will cook the meat for about 20 hours, Radcliff said. I promise you that if you are a barbecue lover, you will fall in love with my barbecue. Organizers say they hope the fund-raiser will become an annual event to raise funds for the various sports programs sponsored by the church. Even though the next team we field will be our basketball team, said co-coordinator Jim Winkler, were calling this a football kickoff because of the timing. For more information or directions to St. Gabriels, call the parish office, 770-461-0492. |
