Bad Links? | McMullen thankful for bike helmetBy JOHN MUNFORD Peachtree City Manager Bernie McMullen is thankful his recent bicycle spill on the cart path system wasnt any worse. And he knows exactly why he was wearing his bike helmet. I did whack my head on the asphalt, McMullen said of the July 7 incident. It didnt faze me at all. McMullen urges parents to use a bike helmet when riding with their children to set a good example. Your children do what they see you do, not what you tell them to do, McMullen said. McMullen suffered five broken ribs in the crash, which he attributed to the slick condition of the paths from rain earlier in the day. It was originally thought he broke just one rib, but after being in tremendous pain after he was first released from the hospital, McMullens wife Cathy had him go back to the hospital, and a CT scan revealed the true extent of his injury. McMullen said he was thankful for the help of strangers who came to his aid after the crash, which occurred on the section of path along Peachtree Parkway near Flat Creek Road. At the time, McMullen was training to participate in the next Peachtree City Triathlon, but with his rib injuries hell have to wait until next year. He was disappointed he didnt get to reach several goals associated with the exercise, but hes proud to say he achieved his weight goal. Back in his younger days, McMullen said it was nothing for him to crash his bike and recover immediately, hopping right back on. Not anymore, he said. I guess its a sign of age, he said. |
