Bad Links? | Tyrone lowers many speed limitsBy LEE WILLIAMS Pay extra attention to traffic signs as you travel around Tyrone because several speed limits posted on main access roads are going down. After learning that traffic fines revenue was lower than projected, Tyrone Town Council members unanimously voted to reduce speed limits on specific roads during a regular meeting Aug. 4 at Town Hall. Town Manager Barry Amos and Tyrone Police Chief Johnny Hay unveiled the speed reductions. Here are the changes: Dogwood Trail from Senoia Road to Ga. Highway 74 will be zoned 35 mph. Senoia Road from Valleywood to Tyrone roads will be zoned 30 mph. Palmetto Road from Senoia Road to town limits will be zoned 35 mph. Tyrone Road from Senoia Road to town limits will be zoned 35 mph. Ashland Trail from Castlewood Road to McDade will be zoned 25 mph. Signage will be posted by town officials. Before voting on the measure, Councilman Paul Letourneau asked if a grace period could be granted to give citizens a chance to adjust to the new speed limits. Theres always a grace period for 30 days when you change the speed limits, Hay said. The measure could net more revenue for the town since last years municipal court revenue, largely made up of traffic ticket fees, fell below projections. But officials say the speed limits were not changed to boost revenue. The town has a reputation of being a speed trap, but thats not true, Letourneau said in a follow-up interview. The objective for reducing the speed limits is to prevent injuries and save lives, Letourneau indicated. Were trying to do the best to protect residents by reducing the speed limits to reduce the number of accidents, Letourneau said. |
