Bad Links? | Who are assessors? The Board of Assessors is a group of three people appointed by the county commission and the Board of Equalization is a 12-member panel appointed by a Fayette County Grand Jury. Appeals first go to the Board of Assessors, and if a change is made at that level, the property owner can decide to accept it or appeal it to the Board of Equalization, Mills said. If the Board of Assessors turns down the appeal, that case is automatically forwarded to the Board of Equalization, Mills said. If a homeowner is unhappy with the Board of Equalization decision, it can be appealed in Fayette Superior Court, Mills said. Last year, the Board of Equalization specially set property values for 155 parcels after hearing appeals from property owners. To comply with a recent taxpayers rights law, those property values are frozen for three consecutive years, Mills said. In 2003, the Board of Equalization specially set property values for 119 parcels. Reported by John Munford. |
