Bad Links? | Art camp proves to be a rousing successBy BEN NELMS Fairburn Mayor Betty Hannah was all smiles Wednesday as she accepted her art book created by a group of local youngsters that attended the citys first summer Art Camp. The children who attended the initial city arts offering at the old depot were smiling, too, and animated and thrilled to have someone come in to view their artistic masterpieces. Art camp Director Syble Green said the inspiration for the wealth of paintings, drawings and other works of art were drawn externally from the local environment and internally from self-impressions of the young artists themselves. We went all around town with our sketch books, looking at the scenery and the sights and based some of our projects on what we saw, Green said. The children also focused on themselves through self portraits and other expressions in their art books and other projects. Now winding down its activities, the camp ran Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The choice of holding classes in the old depot, Green said, was an idea the children loved. Surrounded by some of the citys budding artists, Mayor Hannah summed up the art camp experience and the citys desire to promote creativity among its young citizens. This is something we saw a need for. We were looking for something for our children to do during the summer, Hannah said. Art keeps young minds and imaginations active. Fairburn Parks and Recreation Coordinator Melody Barnes said the city will offer a continuous arts after-school program during the school year. Classes will be held at the citys annex building located at 40 Washington Street. For more information contact Barnes at (770) 964-2244. |
