Bad Links? | Players from area high schools combine for baseball championshipThe 16u Fayette Angels won the 2005 AAU Super Regional baseball tournament, providing their own fireworks by being crowned champions on July 4th. Teams from Florida and Georgia competed in the event, with the Angels defeating the Tallahassee All Stars for the title. The Angels consist of players from five area high schools - McIntosh, Whitewater, Starrs Mill, Landmark and Fayette County. These players usually compete against each other on their respective high school baseball teams. However, they came together for this event and played great baseball. These guys have known each other for years competing in travel ball; some played on the same teams and some played against each other, noted Angels coach Dan Bohrer. For this week, the game of baseball transcended school colors, and everybody wore Angel red. Fayette County schools have a special bond, where players in various sports - baseball, soccer, basketball, and others - play on both school teams and club teams. Best friends sometimes compete with each other one day and against each other the next. Theres plenty of school pride in Fayette, but friendships and the love of the game come first. Its refreshing and exciting to see teenagers and their families act this way. Dan and I are glad to be a part of it, Coach Mark Weiss added. Next spring, they will be slugging it out against each other once again, but for now, they are champions and friends. |
