Bad Links? | Senate to meet on transit safetyState Senators Bill Stephens (R-Canton) and Brian Kemp (R-Athens) have announced plans to hold a joint Senate hearing to examine the security of Georgia's mass transportation systems. This announcement came after the attacks in London last Thursday. "A terrible tragedy like this one reminds us of how we must always be prepared to handle the unexpected," stated Sen. Stephens. "Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and the families of these senseless killings. In a time like this, we must re-examine our safety and security plans and make sure we are doing the best job we can to protect us as we travel to work, to school and to our homes. Stephens serves as the chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee and Kemp serves as chairman of the Senate Public Safety and Homeland Security committee. The meeting is Wednesday, July 27, at 10 a.m. in Room 450 of the State Capitol. "I cannot imagine the pain and grief countless families around the world are feeling today in the wake of these barbaric and cowardly bombings," said Sen. Kemp. "The prayers of the entire state of Georgia go out to the families of those lost, and remind us of our responsibility to be even more vigilant here at home. The joint hearing into mass transit safety will focus on testimony from homeland security experts and transportation officials on what precautions are being taken to prevent similar attacks in Georgia and what other legislative measures might be introduced to protect Georgians. |
