Bad Links? | Picking up the tabsBy CAROLYN CARY A soft drink tab is one inch long, and there are 1,367 tabs in a pound. It takes 63,360 of them to stretch out one mile. There were enough tabs collected last year for the Ronald McDonald House in Columbus to pay its utility bills for nearly a year. If all those tabs collected were stretched end to end, they would go in a line for just over 60 miles. Johnny Osse of Fayetteville is leading the drive in this area to collect soft drink tabs to support the Ronald McDonald House in Columbus. A member of the Fayetteville Gold Wing Road Riders club, he and other cyclists will lead a caravan Saturday, Aug. 20, beginning at Applebees in the North Griffin Square. The restaurant will be serving breakfast sandwiches and beverages with registration beginning at 7 a.m. The fee is $10 per rider, and the ride leaves at 9:30 a.m. The ride will end at the Callaway Gardens beach area where the tabs will be weighed and trophies presented to winners in various categories. The tab run began 7 years ago when the sister of the tab run organizer delivered a preemie baby, only weighing about one pound. Olivia Andrews is now a healthy and beautiful seven-year-old. The parents were able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House for less that $10 a day while their baby progressed in weight. In gratitude the tab run began and grows in number of tabs turned in each year. Soft drink tabs are 99 percent pure aluminum and in bulk quantity and can be worth quite a bit of money. The soft drink can itself is only 80 percent pure aluminum. If you wish to add to this cause, start saving your soft drink tabs now and call Osse [oh-see] by Friday, August 19. He will be glad to pick them up or meet you somewhere. His phone number is 770-460-0955. |
