Bad Links? | I-85 ramps shutting down tonightBy BEN NELMS Fairburn residents beware. The long-promised closure of the southbound ramps at Ga. Highway 74 along I-85 is finally upon you. The fun begins Friday at 9 p.m. Georgia Dept. of Transportation (DOT) construction crews will close the southbound entrance and exit ramps to the expressway Friday night and they will remain closed until 5 a.m. Monday. Along with ramp closures, extreme traffic congestion is expected with only one lane remaining open from just north to just south of the Hwy. 74 exit. The only thing that might stop the work will be inclement weather, said DOT spokesperson Karlene Barron. The usual alternative routes in Palmetto and Union City are advised. The work at Hwy. 74 is the southernmost portion of the southbound project. DOT crews will continue work in coming weeks on the northbound side of I-85, with the completion of the entire project anticipated to be completed in September.
