Bad Links? | Man dies in South Fulton jailBy BEN NELMS A Bremen man arrested June 12 in Fairburn for driving under the influence and causing a traffic accident on Roosevelt Highway was found dead in his cell at South Fulton Municipal Regional Jail the following morning. The arrest came after 66 year-old Raymond Elsberry hit another vehicle in the rear and he subsequently registered a blood/alcohol level of .324 when tested at Fairburn Police Department, according to Fairburn police reports. Jail Chief John Mansch said Wednesday that Elsberry was seen awake in his cell at 4 a.m. the following morning and did not appear to be in any physical stress. When checked by a jailer serving breakfast two hours later, Elsberry did not respond to directions, Mansch said. The jailer attempted to awaken Elsberry but could not do so, he added. It appears that Elsberry passed away in his sleep, said Mansch. Mansch said Georgia Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating the death. Its routine in matters like this to have GBI requested to come in and investigate the situation, said Mansch. Mansch said the jail is awaiting the autopsy report from the medical examiner. Fairburn police arrived at the scene of the accident at Roosevelt Highway and Ga. Highway 138 at 9:50 a.m. on June 12, finding Bremen's car still running after having rear-ended a vehicle stopped at a traffic light, according to police reports. Incident reports indicated Elsberry had difficulty exiting the vehicle and noted the very strong odor of alcohol and the presence of an empty bottle of vodka on the floor of the front seat. Though he had trouble talking, Elsberry told officers he was in Villa Rica, reports said. Elsberry was charged with driving under the influence and following too close. No one was seriously injured in the accident. |
