Bad Links? | Ambrose to design Promise Place brochuresMallory Ambrose, a recent graduate from McIntosh High School, was chosen from her graphic arts class to design the new Youth Education brochures for Promise Place. Promise Place, the Council on Domestic Violence for Fayette County, has a unique program for ninth-graders in the Fayette County School System where volunteers go into the health classes twice a year to educate the students on the red flags and warning signs of an unhealthy dating relationship. The philosophy is that education is prevention and that reaching the children before they are start dating will help them make healthy choices in their relationships. This outreach may ultimately save their lives. National statistics show that one in every eight high school students has experienced violence and one in every college student has been physically abused. Promise Place is a nonprofit organization which relies on community support. They serve over 400 women and 500 children each year in Fayette County who are victims of domestic violence. The Youth Education Program is one of many free programs offered. Other services include crisis intervention, legal advocacy, weekly support groups, counseling for children, and 24 hour hot line. Currently the organization is working toward raising funds for an emergency shelter in Fayette County for women and children who are victims of violence. For more information, to volunteer or to make a donation, please call Promise Place at 770-460-1604 or Heidi Becker, Community Outreach Director at 770-846-8659. |
