Bad Links? | Young web designers earn statewide awardsWeb sites designed by several student teams at Sara Harp Minter Elementary have been recognized for excellence by a statewide competition called PROMOTE GA. The schools fourth- and fifth-grade enrichment students participated in the competition, which requires students to select a subject then research, write, edit and design a website to teach others about what they learned. Sara Harp had 11 teams in the competition with three of them sweeping the West Georgia Region judged by the State University of West Georgia. Hurricanes, a web site designed by a fifth grade team and coached by Jill Kirkland, won first place, while two fourth grade teams, Sharks and Wetland Mammals, coached by Susan Mills, tied for second. The development of these sites began at the beginning of the school year when teams were formed, topics were selected, research was conducted, and writing was perfected. The web site design and construction followed. Each site includes an index page, research pages, a bibliography, state curriculum standards, games, student information and an email address for feedback. Many of the graphics included on the sites were student produced. Debbie Forrester guided the teams in the web site design and construction portion of the project. PROMOTE GA is a project-based learning model that requires the instructors to teach the basics of each phase, research, writing, editing, designing, and construction, while the students actually produce the work. One significant purpose of this project is the development of teamwork skills. |
