Bob Adams Homes introduces Universal DesignIf you are asking yourself, What is Universal Design? you are not alone. Bob Adams Homes hopes to educate the general public on this concept by including it into their homes in several of their new communities. In a nutshell, it calls for design adapting to people rather than people adapting to design. Ask yourself: Have you ever been on crutches, even for a few days? Have you ever tried to get a huge load of laundry through a standard doorway, without scraping your elbows on the door jamb? How about transferring a screaming three-year-old and an infant in a stroller into the house in the rain? Now, imagine doing some of those things in a wheelchair. Not pleasant thoughts, none of them, but if we live long enough, and statistics show that we very likely will, we will face one, if not all of the above. Universal Design does not turn your home into a handicap assessable home, but it does make it visitable, and quite accommodating to anyone who is disabled, by providing wider door ways, rocker switch plates, a no-step entry, single lever handles on doors and all faucets, to name only a few. We dont live in a Peter Pan World, where no one grows old or is different. We are all quite different - different heights, ages, abilities, strengths, weaknesses and preferences. Yet, most of our homes are designed for the standard person. Universal Design considers all of these factors, and incorporates certain changes into homes that will allow people of all abilities to live in one home, for their entire life span, if so desired. Imagine living in one happy home through all of those stages and being comfortable, safe, and accommodated. That is what Bob Adams Homes intends to do for its homeowners by introducing Universal Design into their homes.
