Sportsmanship the winner at Old Courthouse 5K

If you were to ask first time Old Courthouse 5K runner Raymond Green of Lithonia, what was the longer of two trips, his drive down from Lithonia, Georgia or the 3.1 miles he ran to win the 13th Annual Old Courthouse 5k, his answer just may be the 5K. Because of a wrong turn that he took near the midway point of the race, Green ran a bit further than the other runners.

Bob Dalton of Peachtree City, a nine time winner, was trailing Green and could have said nothing, but he couldn’t let the newcomer go astray, calling out to him, that he had made the wrong turn, as they approached the turn-around point. The race route mistake cost Green the lead, however it didn’t deter him from seeking his first overall Old Courthouse 5K Road Race Trophy. Though crossing the finish line just seconds behind Dalton, the former winner relinquished his trophy to the deserving Green, announcing to all that Raymond Green was the winner of this year’s race.

Fayette County Civitan Club race officials agreed with Bob Dalton. Based upon a consensus decision, the Men’s and Over-All winner went to Raymond Green with an unadjusted time of 17:22. Though the end results were correct, race officials are determined not let a mistake like this happen in the future.

Darryl Douglass, Event Directory, stated following the results were counted, “For all future events, we’ll post more race officials on the route to help keep the runners from going off course. We take full responsibility for the error, but fortunately all ended well in this year’s race.”

In the women’s category, Ashley Roseman of McDonough, won the Over-All Title for the second year in a row with a time of 21:34.

The final official results across all age and gender categories are posted below. The planning of next year’s 14th Annual Old Courthouse 5k has already begun, and is scheduled for May 20, 2006.
