Bad Links? | Road work continues on I-85By BEN NELMS Construction on I-85 southbound may be coming to a close in coming weeks, but for Fairburn and Tyrone residents and anyone accessing either side of the expressway from SR 74, the situation will feel more like a slow boat to China. First up this weekend, the two right southbound lanes from just south of SR 138 to just north of SR 74 will be closed, as will the two left lanes northbound between SR 74 and SR 138, according to Georgia Dept. of Transportation spokesperson Karlene Barron. Closures will begin Friday at 9 p.m. and run through Monday at 5 a.m. Also this weekend on northbound I-85, the two left lanes between Flat Shoals and Buffington overpass will be closed. One lane on southbound in the same location will also be closed, Barrono said. Beginning Friday June 10 at 9 p.m. through June 13 at 5 a.m. construction crews will close the two right lanes of I-85 southbound from just north to just south of the SR 74 exit, effectively closing the southbound exit and entrance ramps. Weather permitting, this will allow construction crews to complete reconstruction of the southbound side of I-85. Once contractors have completed the southbound side they anticipate beginning work on the northbound side in late June or early July. The result will be the closure of the northbound entrance ramp at SR 74 along with the closure of the two right northbound lanes from SR 74 to just south of the SR 138 exit. This reconstruction project is very critical as there are some concrete slabs in that corridor that are badly in need of repair, said metro area construction engineer Mickey McGee. We know it is inconvenient for motorists, so we ask that people plan ahead and try to find alternative routes so that they are not stuck in the inevitable delays that will occur while we are working. Barron said DOT will suspend work in the area on the upcoming July 4 weekend in an effort to accommodate heavy travel. |
