Bad Links? | Members seek to reclaim country club By MICHAEL BOYLAN Will Whitewater Country Club, now called The Palmer Course at Starrs Mill, be called Whitewater Country Club again? It will if a group of current members is successful in making the club member-owned. According to resident David Harris, the overall goal is for the club to be completely private. This can be accomplished by finding enough people willing to be dues-paying full members, which would provide enough money to take over the current loan. For now, the group is looking to take over the loan and remain accessible to the public through corporate outings and such. Once the club is up and running though, it will be a private club with all of the money from membership going back into the club. The first step into becoming a private club is a meeting next Tuesday. The purpose of this meeting is to accept applications for membership at no initiation fee with plans to be member-owned by July 1, 2005. The club needs a minimum of 300 dues-paying full members, with each member paying a monthly fee plus a food minimum per month. A full membership is $250 and a $100 food minimum a month, while a social membership is $75 and a $100 food minimum a month. There will be no initiation fee for the first 300 full members. The concern over the state of the club has been growing for several years. Current members and homeowners feel that the cart paths and bunkers need to be replaced or refurbished and the clubhouse needs to be redecorated. According to Harris, current owner John Boykin put close to $400,000 in a new irrigation system but even he is hoping that the members are successful in taking over. His name gets off the lease if this deal goes through, said Harris. Harris estimates that there are around 150 people interested in becoming full members. It will take another 150 to make this run at becoming an exclusive club successful, and Harris and the other members hope that there are enough interested golfers and residents to get the deal done. If there are enough members, the bank will approve a subject to sale and the members will be able to step directly into the loan. The public is invited to attend the cocktail party and informational meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Palmer Course.
