Bad Links? | Winning them both waysPanthers, Tigers and War Eagles all advance to quarterfinalsBy MICHAEL BOYLAN Any coach will tell you that a win is a win and the varsity baseball teams at Starrs Mill, Fayette County and Landmark Christian School are all winning, both by the slimmest of margins and by blowouts. Starrs Mill hosted the Glynn Academy Terror on Wednesday and won the first game 1-0 in an incredible pitching duel between the Panthers Nick Terry and the Terrors Cletus Jessup. Terry gave up five hits in the game while Jessup only gave up four hits. Fortunately for Starrs Mill, one of their hits was a home run by Joey Lewis. It was Lewis second home run in his last three at bats. Jessup struck out 11 batters in the game while Terry struck out 10. The second game was the exact opposite. Starrs Mill jumped on Glynn Academy in the first inning with a two run home run from Lewis and then added 15 more runs in the second. Kory Ison had five RBI in the inning, while Philip Shell, Ryan Lockett and Ben Baker each drove in two runs and Andrew Robinson, Jimmy Tanner and Carter Scurry each drove in one. Robinson pitched a complete game shutout in three innings, giving up one hit and striking out three batters. Were really tearing it up in the second game of these doubleheaders, said Coach Brent Moseley, citing his teams success in the season ending doubleheader against Jonesboro (18-0) and their win in the first round of the state playoffs against Riverdale (12-0). The Panthers (24-4) are excited to have made it back to the state quarterfinals and are looking for revenge against Parkview, the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year. In other Class AAAAA tournament action Wednesday, Fayette County defeated Camden County in two games. The Tigers won the first game 4-3 on the strength of a three run home run in the first inning from Rick Williams and a solo shot from RiChard Davis. The second game was not as close as they defeated the Wildcats 11-3. Williams added another home run in the win and pitcher Austin Wilkes struck out five batters in the win. Fayette County will play at Lassiter next week. In Class A action, Landmark Christian defeated Gordon Lee in two games, 11-2 in the first game and 13-10 in the second. They will face the winner of the Atkinson County and Brookstone series. The state quarterfinal games are tentatively scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
