Bad Links? | Jamaican brothers unveil restaurant in Union CityBy BEN NELMS The dream began on the Caribbean island of Jamaica. That dream came true more than a decade later in Union City. Two brothers twins, in fact brought their dream of working together to fruition with the recent opening of P Brothers Restaurant at 5077 Union Street. Omar and Garfield Plunkett bring with them a combined 25 years of restaurant experience in the Caribbean, New York City and Atlanta, to feature an international cuisine that specializes in the the tastes made famous in the exotic tropical setting surrounded by clear Caribbean waters. And diners from Union City, Fairburn and surrounding areas will taste the difference. Located across from city court and adjacent to the city depot, first-time visitors will be struck by the clean, crisp atmosphere, mellow music and sand colored walls accented by tropical photos. Polite and quiet-spoken, it is the presence of Plunkett brothers that provide the essence of the ambiance to the tasty fare and and pleasant surroundings. Breakfast offerings include ackee & cod served with friend dumplings and plantain. Having attained the status as Jamaica's national dish when served along with cod, the unusual fruit is considered a delicacy as a breakfast item or as an entree. Other island breakfast items include greens & cod while traditional American fare is also plentiful. Breakfast, of course, is served anytime. Its around lunch time and on through dinner where the exotic flavor of the islands comes into full swing. Menu offerings include stewed oxtail, curry chicken and curry goat, filet of tilipia or whiting, grilled chicken penne pasta and rib eye steak au poivre. Rounding out the menu are a variety of burgers and sandwiches, salads and homemade desserts and daily specials. Homemade iced tea is always on hand as are several flavors of D&G Jamaican sodas. The Plunkett brothers also provide catering services as well as in-house accommodations for a variety of special events. The Plunkett brothers arrived in Union City with a dream attached to a quarter century of experience, having trained under some of New Yorks executive chefs. Before making his way to New York City, Garfield worked for five years at the Marriot Renaissance in Jamaica and at the Hyatt Regency on Grand Cayman Island for four years. His relocation to New York City landed him positions at the Dellafemina Restaurant and the New York Renaissance in Times Square for a total of three years. Relocating then to Atlanta, Garfield worked at the Ritz Carlton for two years and invested an additional year at the Airport Renaissance Hotel. We have many years of experience and were all about customer service. And thats not only with cuisine, its also with hygiene and cleanliness, Garfield said. We want the people of Union City and Fairburn to know were here. Once they visit us, we believe they will see the difference and come back. Omar echoed those sentiments, adding that the brothers chose their location in Union City to provide their own special kind of approach to dining to the South Fulton area. Prior to relocating recently to metro Atlanta, Omar spent three years at the Sans Souci Hotel in New York City and another seven years in the city working with establishments in the Smith & Willinsky Restaurant Group, including the Post House Restaurant and the Mahloney & Porcelli Restaurant. With their new venture in Union city, Omar asked that patrons to do what many restaurants try to avoid. We want people to critique our menu and tell us what they think, he said. we are here to please our customers, Omar added. In all, the P brothers have experience in high-scale restaurants that has given them culinary experience in Caribbean, French, Italian, American and Chinese cuisine. But experience aside, their desire to continue in the restaurant business and to do so together runs much deeper. Our dad was a chef and weve had other relatives in the business, Garfield explained. So theres something in us, in our blood. We understand each other and were open for each others opinions. Maybe we work well together because were twins, but its also how our mother raised us. And now, were here in the Union City-Fairburn area, together in business for the first time in our lives, living our dream. |
