Bad Links? | Woman charged in sons beatingBy LEE WILLIAMS Intervention from Fayette County Department of Family and Children Services officials, Fayette County school officials and the Peachtree City police led to the arrest of a Fayette County mother charged with beating her 8-year-old son after he broke a lamp. Chey Upshaw, 33, faces one count of first-degree cruelty to children. She was transported to the Fayette County Jail and released after posting a $25,000 bond. Upshaws arrest stems from an allegation she beat an 8-year-old boy with a switch and a belt after he broke a lamp. DFACS workers met with the child at an unspecified local elementary school and noted an excessive amount of visible marks on him, Peachtree City Police Chief James Murray said. Police were called in to probe further. Police responded to Upshaws home in the Harmony Village apartment complex to assist DFACS workers on the investigation. The child was further examined at the apartment. At the residence, the child was found with numerous cuts, bruises, marks on his arms, legs and torso, Murray said. After speaking with the child and his three other siblings, officers were told he had been disciplined for breaking a lamp. Upshaw was detained and DFACS workers took the four children into custody pending the outcome of the case. |
