What do you think of this story? Bad Links? | World War II days are this weekendRemember Pearl Harbor!, KilroyWas Here, Rosie the Riveter, Benny Goodman and Zoot Suits. Experience the sights and sounds of World War II at the Dixie Wing of the Commemorative Air Force second Annual World War II Day May 7. The event is from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at their hangar, The Historical Airpower Facility, Falcon Field, and features military collectibles vendors, WWII vehicles and vintage aircraft, including rides in World War II aircraft. The event begins with a ceremony commemorating the 60th anniversary of the end of WorldWar II and will include living history encampments and demonstrations by American and German WWII reenactors. Local chapter members of the National MilitaryHistorical Association will represent allied and axis armies. In addition, the Military VehiclePreservation Association will display several World War II vehicles, including an M-4 Sherman tank, M-3 Half-track and reproduction StuG III, an armored vehicle used by the German army during the war. Other participating organizations include the National Association of Rosie the Riveters, the Atlanta History Center and the Atlanta World War II Round Table. Educational displays and activities will be available for the entire family, including a swing band combo and swing dance lessons for mom and dad. Breakfast and lunch will be available at an army mess tent. The Dixie Wing CAF is a non-profit education organization that relies on donations and fundraisers to preserve WWII aircraft and teach WWII history. World War II Day is an annual program that supports Education Through Living History (ETLH), the Dixie Wing CAF World War II history program that is made available by Dixie Wing volunteers to schools and youth groups free of charge. Suggested donation is $5 per person, children 12 and under admitted Free. The public is also asked to bring a canned food item to be donated to the Fayette Samaritans food pantry. The Commemorative Air Force is a non-profit organization dedicated to flying and restoring World War II aircraft.
