What do you think of this story? Bad Links? | Starship to rock the Fred this weekend
Find your way back to the Frederick Brown, Jr. Amphitheater this weeked for a great double bill of live music with Starship and Pure Prairie League. Both outfits, known for their melodic rock sound, are playing both Friday and Saturday night. Individual tickets are available at the Box Office, at Ticketmaster Outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com, or charge by phone 404-249-6400. Mickey Thomas, the owner of the soaring voice that propelled Starship through the decade of the 80's, are probably not aware that he sang the lead vocals for Elvin Bishop Band's 1976 hit "Fooled Around And Fell In Love." Thomas was in the Elvin Bishop Band from 1976 to 1979 and then left to climb aboard the Starship in April 1979, replacing Marty Balin as lead singer. "I was doing lead vocals for Elvin Bishop, and it said Elvin Bishop Band on the record label, so people naturally assume if they didn't know better that Elvin Bishop was the vocalist," Thomas explains. "So I've been trying to educate people in that regard for many years. And then in spite of the many hits I had with Starship, because a lot of the times I was in the band at the same time as Grace Slick or I was following in the footsteps of Marty Balin, quite often people didn't put my name together with the songs. So I am still trying to overcome that." Regardless of getting the proper recognition, every Starship album released since 1979 has gone Gold, Platinum or Multi-Platinum. Thomas voice was leading on the hits "Jane," "Sara", We Built This City", "Stranger", "No Way Out", "Find Your Way Back", "It's Not Over ('Til It's Over)" and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," among others. Backing up the Starship is another classic group known for their country-flavored pop rock melodies, Pure Prairie League. Reunited to treat their fans to music that sounds as good today as it did when they first performed, Pure Prairie League is touring and enjoying every minute of it.The League has been playing true to its origninal form. "People come to hear the music the way it was played back then," original member Craig Fuller asserts. "We may have improved upon the fidelity, but when we do a song off one of our records, we do it just like it was recorded." They are best know for their hits "Amie" from their debut LP Bustin' Out, and "Let Me Love You Tonight," from Firin' Up. | | |
