Bad Links? | Fayette Sr. Svcs. honors volunteersBy CAROLYN CARY The Fayette Senior Services honored its volunteers at a breakfast held at the Wyndham Conference Center. The organization has been serving the community since 1978. Nancy Britton, volunteer coordinator, told the 80 volunteers present that volunteers plant the seeds of kindness. There are 180 community-minded citizens who give their time each month in various ways. Of those, 160 carry food to shut-in seniors on Monday through Friday. The others give their time at the Friendship Center, located behind Melears restaurant. The senior center is open from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with lunch provided. A sliding fee is used for participation at the center. Dixie Anderson is one of the volunteer drivers and the first week she started, she accidentally backed up into a fence and was afraid she would be fired. Though she owns her own company, she said she wondered if she was fit to be a volunteer. Another driver told of finding a dead deer across the doorway of her client, and she couldnt even get in the house. These intrepid drivers and their compatriots deliver 170 meals a day, and give nearly 9,000 hours a year to the Friendship Center. Executive director Andy Carden relayed that a building for the countys senior citizens is in sight. A groundbreaking will be held in the Fall of 2005, with expectations of moving in the fall of 2006. The new facility will be on the grounds of the new county Justice Center. They are currently in a house built in 1905. For information, call 770-461-0813. |
